The Original Hands-Free Door Opener
Since 2007, Springfield Missouri
Inspiration to Conception
StepNpull isn’t just a product or a company. It’s an example of what can happen when three entrepreneurs combine ingenuity, teamwork, patience, and a desire to solve problems. The company officially launched in 2007, but can trace its roots to the early 1990s when Mike Sewell, Ron Ely and Kelly Coddington became co-workers at a telecommunications company. The trio became good friends and often talked about going into business together.
The opportunity presented itself while Mike was a facilities director. He noticed employees opening the door handle with paper towels to avoid touching the handle. Many would litter the floor with the used towels. Mike determined a foot-operated door opener would eliminate both problems: no spreading germs through touching the door and no paper towel waste. He enlisted Kelly to design and fabricate the first prototype. Ron’s construction experience helped them determine where to place the device on a door. Ron also created the name: StepNpull.
For the first several years, StepNpull was a nice side business for the three owners. They took orders by phone and manufactured and shipped the foot-operated door openers from a garage. The company expanded with purchases from major corporations like Boeing, Coca-Cola, Facebook, Google, and Walmart. Lowe’s, Amazon and other retailers started selling the device. Next came international expansion with distribution partners established in The United Kingdom, Slovenia, Australia, Hong Kong, and South Africa.
Then COVID-19 Happened
One of the long-term impacts of the pandemic is a newfound emphasis on minimizing the spread of germs. Businesses and organizations around the world sought ways to protect their customers and employees. Many have turned to the StepNpull hands-free door opener as a way to protect the public from spreading germs by touching the same door handles.
Business exploded in 2020 as a result. The company’s patented device gained national and international media coverage. Orders flooded in from around the world. In just one month — March 2020 — the company sold more StepNpull door openers than they had previously in their history. This required additional employees at its Springfield, Missouri headquarters as well as more international distributors and manufacturing capacity.
What hasn’t changed is the bond between StepNpull’s founders and their philosophy for being open and honest, working as a team, being patient, and treating people fairly.
The StepNpull Quality Difference
The StepNpull foot operated door pull mounts on any commercial latch-less wood or metal door, and gives the user the option of pulling the door open with their foot instead of the door handle. With StepNpull, the weight of the door is not a factor. If an interior door closer resistance is adjusted to the ADA standard of 5 pounds or less, then the user will be able to easily open the door with their foot using StepNpull. We've put 13 years of work into perfecting and testing the quality of the StepNpull product to ensure it lasts.
StepNpull is the original hands-free door opener and we have been in operation since 2007. Through this experience, we have perfected our product and it has been installed on hundreds of thousands of doors around the world. StepNpull’s distinctive sleek design was crafted in 2007 and includes trademarked angled front edges.
StepNpull is made with extruded aluminum, NOT bent metal. The process of using extruded aluminum ensures longevity and durability of the product over time. Other similar looking products are bending
a sheet of metal into the shape of an L, which over time may eventually lose its form and even drag
StepNpull provides a custom manufactured barrel bolt to prevent wearing out of the mounting hole, while other products may only provide screws.
StepNpull comes in one of four colors, is powder coated, and comes with stainless steel mounting screws to prevent rusting and wear over time.
StepNpull offers a 15-year warranty on all devices.
The StepNpull has been UL has tested and certified. It meets specific, defined requirements based on UL's published and nationally recognized Standards for Safety.
Meet the Team
Inventor & President
Mike Sewell is the president of KRM Innovations, Inc. and co-inventor of the StepNpull foot-operated door opener. In 2020, Mike retired from a 30-year career at Verizon Wireless to focus exclusively on leading StepNpull through the next phase of its brand evolution. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mike has led the company through its exponential growth and international recognition as businesses look for ways to minimize the spread of germs. Mike’s focus has thus shifted from day-to-day business operations to long-term initiatives such as recruiting key talent, expanding StepNpull’s product line, and implementing new processes.
Inventor & VP of Innovation
Mike Sewell turned to friend and co-worker Kelly Coddington to design the first foot-operated door opener prototype. Kelly drew upon his years of experience in fabrication, engineering, and “tinkering with things” to carve out the first StepNpulls. Like the company’s other co-founders, Kelly has spent his entire 30-year career in telecommunications while serving as a Vice President for StepNpull since 2007. In the company’s early days, he helped manufacture the devices from his garage and package them for shipping. With StepNpull’s explosive growth in 2020, he is now focusing on ways to engineer improvements to StepNpull and investigating new hands-free applications for the company to market.
Inventor & VP of Sales
Ron Ely is a co-founder of StepNpull and serves as Vice President of Sales. He is also credited with creating the name of the product and company. In 2019, Ron retired from a 30-year telecommunications career to help StepNpull expand. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he’s focused on helping the company’s growing customer base minimize the spread of germs in their facilities. His woodworking and building skills — he built the log home he lives in — help assure customers of the durability and effectiveness of the StepNpull foot-operated door opener.
